Fatal two-car crash disrupts traffic on I-57 in Iroquois County

7:10 p.m. update: The Iroquois County coroner has identified the individual who tragically lost their life in a collision on I-57 on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as 97-year-old Mattie Robertson from Memphis, TN. The incident occurred near milepost 293 in Ashkum around noon. Robertson was driving in the left lane near a work zone, but as the lane was closed up ahead, she switched to the right lane where she collided with another vehicle, causing both vehicles to come to a stop in a nearby corn field. Robertson was the sole occupant of her vehicle. State Police have confirmed the reopening of all northbound lanes on I-57 following the accident at approximately 5 p.m. Illinois State Police officials are currently investigating the fatal two-car crash that transpired in Iroquois County on Tuesday. The accident, which occurred around noon near milepost 293 in Ashkum, resulted in one fatality. As a consequence, all northbound lanes on I-57 are currently closed and are anticipated to remain so for some time. Motorists are advised to find alternate routes to avoid the area.
