Fatal rollover accident involving truck driver in Rome

ROME, NY - Tragically, the driver of a landscaping company's tractor trailer lost their life in a fatal rollover on Friday morning at the Martin Street exit ramp in Rome. The accident occurred as the truck, owned by Real Deal Landscaping in Cold Brook, was navigating the westbound Route 49 around 8:45AM. Initial reports from the Onieda County Sheriff's Office indicate that while making the turn onto the Martin Street ramp, the driver of the dump truck-style trailer lost control, veering off the ramp's left side. The vehicle collided with a guardrail near a bridge, causing it to overturn and land upside down in a wooded area with an embankment. The driver, yet to be publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Unit and Forensic Unit are leading the inquiry due to the severity of the incident. Meanwhile, officials from the New York State Department of Transportation have closed the Martin Street exit on Route 49 to assess the bridge's structural safety following the crash. Responders from various agencies, including State Police, State D.E.C., and the Rome Fire Department, were also present at the scene.
