Fatal multi-vehicle collision in Pennsylvania blamed on whiteout weather

In Mercer County, Pennsylvania, a tragic accident on Thursday resulted in the death of a man following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 79. The incident took place around 11:45am on I-79 south at mile marker 121 under whiteout conditions with snow on the road. The Pennsylvania State Police reported that the chain reaction collision began when a semi-trailer stopped in the right lane due to traffic, only to be struck by another semi from behind. Subsequently, a third vehicle hit the stopped second semi in the left lane. Despite moderate damage to the two semis, the third vehicle suffered major damage to its front end and driver's side. Regrettably, the driver of the third vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Mercer County Coroner's Office. The second semi's driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries of unknown severity. The crash led to the closure of the roadway for approximately 4 hours. As a cautionary reminder, the National Weather Service advises drivers to exercise caution and slow down when driving in snowy conditions, as a substantial percentage of ice and snow-related injuries occur in automobiles.
