Fatal multi-truck collision on I-96 near Portland
A tragic accident on I-96 near mile marker 71 involving a semi truck, a box truck, and a pickup truck resulted in the loss of two lives on Tuesday. The Ionia County Sheriff's Office reported that the collision occurred around 3:14 p.m. in the westbound lanes. It appears that the semi truck was stopped in traffic, causing the pickup truck following behind to slow down or stop. Subsequently, the box truck was unable to brake in time, leading to a chain reaction crash that resulted in both the pickup truck and box truck catching fire. Tragically, both drivers of these vehicles were unable to escape and lost their lives. The semi truck driver emerged unscathed from the incident. The sheriff's office has attributed the cause of the accident to heavy traffic and inadequate following distances. The westbound section of I-96 was closed as emergency responders worked at the scene. Dispatch reports indicate that the road may reopen around 10 p.m. at the earliest.
