
Fatal Motorcycle Accident on North Montana Avenue
Latest at 7:45 p.m. on July 8, 2025 — Lewis and Clark County Sheriff and Coroner Leo Dutton has confirmed that the motorcyclist who passed away in the tragic incident is James Shurtliff, 59, of Helena. It was reported by Dutton that despite EMS efforts to revive Shurtliff en route to St. Peter's Health after a vehicle struck his motorcycle, he succumbed to multiple blunt force injuries. Authorities have determined that the collision by the vehicle driver was unintentional. In the initial report from Helena police, it was mentioned that a collision occurred between a motorcycle and a truck on the north side of town on Monday night. The incident took place at the intersection of North Montana Avenue and Ptarmigan Lane, with the motorcyclist, a 59-year-old male, moving north on North Montana Avenue when the truck, heading south, made a left turn. The motorcyclist suffered severe injuries and was rushed to St. Peter’s Health, where he later passed away. Investigations are ongoing, with the man's identity set to be made public by the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff and Coroner’s Office after notifying his family.
