Fatal Long Island crash involving fire truck
A fatal accident occurred on Thursday in Suffolk County involving a fire truck and a sedan at a busy Medford intersection on Route 112, just south of the Long Island Expressway. The collision took place as volunteer firefighters were on their way to a house fire in North Patchogue. Video footage captured the moment the Medford Fire Department truck struck the sedan, causing the sedan's door to become stuck on the front bumper of the fire truck and pushing the crushed vehicle down the road. The driver of the sedan, identified as 39-year-old Jason Copper from Sound Beach, tragically did not survive the crash. The victim's father, Michael Copper, stated that his son, who ran a swimming pool business, would always obey traffic rules and pull over for emergency vehicles. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, particularly focusing on whether Copper failed to notice the emergency sirens and vehicles stopped at the intersection. The investigation process is ongoing, and Medford Fire District officials expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the fortunate survival of the firefighters involved. Both vehicles have been impounded for further investigation.
