Fatal incident involving Long Island MRI machine.
A 61-year-old man from New York tragically passed away after being pulled into an MRI machine this week, according to Nassau County police on Friday. The man had a significant metal chain on and entered a room without permission while the MRI device, which utilizes a powerful magnetic field, was in operation at a medical facility in Westbury on Wednesday afternoon. The metal chain caused him to be drawn into the machine, leading to a medical emergency, as mentioned by the police, who stated that the incident happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. He was declared deceased from his injuries at a hospital on Thursday at 2:36 p.m., as per the police's update on Friday. Safety protocols for MRI machines mandate that individuals should not bring any metal objects into the procedure room. Patients usually need to change into appropriate attire before the procedure and undergo screening regarding any implants or metal in their bodies. "Thorough screening of individuals and items entering the MR environment is essential to prevent any objects entering the magnet area that could pose a risk," says the Food and Drug Administration on its website concerning safety measures concerning magnetic resonance. The medical office where the incident occurred, Nassau Open MRI, is located in Westbury, a town with a population of about 15,000 in Nassau County on Long Island.
