Fatal Head-On Crash on Highway 4, Balfour Road in Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (May 22, 2025) — Two people are dead following a head-on crash Wednesday night on Highway 4, near Balfour Road in Brentwood, according to the California Highway Patrol. Two-Vehicle Collision in Brentwood The two-vehicle collision between a gray car and a white SUV occurred around 10:20 p.m. on May 21st, the CHP report said. One of the vehicles reportedly crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed into the other vehicle. A white SUV electric vehicle involved in the crash reportedly caught on fire and wound up in a ditch, according to a Contra Costa Fire Protection District representative. Two Killed in Head-on Traffic Accident Both drivers were confirmed dead following the crash, but it's unknown if there were any others injured. Police closed down the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 for roughly seven hours to conduct their investigation. The highway reopened to traffic at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, the CHP said. The lithium batteries in the electric vehicle spewed harmful hydrogen fluoride chemicals with the smoke, prompting fire crews to let the fire burn itself out. Finally, firefighters requested a hazardous materials team from Contra Costa County. The deadly crash remains under investigation. Legal Questions?
