Fatal DUI collision in Walnut Creek on Wednesday: CHP

A driver who was traveling in the wrong direction was taken into custody after reportedly causing a fatal crash at the junction of Interstate 680 and Highway 24 in Walnut Creek early Wednesday morning, as per the California Highway Patrol. The incident unfolded when officers were alerted to a dark-colored Toyota RAV4 traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-680 in Solano County; the vehicle proceeded into Contra Costa County and collided head-on with a white Dodge Challenger on the transition ramp from eastbound Highway 24 to northbound I-680. The Dodge driver tragically passed away at the scene, while the Toyota driver survived and was hospitalized. Following an investigation, it was determined that the Toyota driver was impaired and was subsequently arrested. The individual will face charges of vehicular manslaughter and DUI upon being cleared medically.
