Fatal crash raises concerns about police pursuit policy.
There has been an arrest following a police pursuit that resulted in the tragic death of an innocent individual. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Hasan Harris, lost his life during the incident on August 23rd near 51st and Center in Milwaukee. The pursuit was initiated by police in pursuit of a suspect linked to a shooting, who ultimately collided with Harris' vehicle. One arrest has been made, a 17-year-old boy, while another individual sustained serious injuries, and a third person is still at large. This marks the fourth fatality in police pursuits in Milwaukee over the past two months. Former Milwaukee Police Department Chief Ed Flynn, who was instrumental in establishing the current chase policy, is now advocating for a change, citing concerns about its effectiveness in ensuring public safety. In light of recent incidents, Flynn believes it is time for a policy adjustment to incorporate new technologies and better address the risks involved in police chases. Current Police Chief Jeffrey Norman did not provide a direct response when questioned about the policy, emphasizing the need to address reckless driving in the city. Mayor Cavalier Johnson highlighted the balancing act involved in police pursuits and stressed the importance of individuals not fleeing from law enforcement. Authorities are still seeking information on the individual who fled the scene and encourage anyone with information to contact the Milwaukee Police Department at 414-935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at 414-224-TIPS.
