Fatal crash on I-80 possibly caused by drunk driving

A fatal collision that occurred on I-80 in Richmond overnight on Sunday resulted in the death of one person, as reported by the California Highway Patrol. The incident, which took place close to Hilltop Drive at approximately 2:08 a.m., involved a BMW 440i and a Toyota Prius. Following a preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that a passenger seated in the rear of the Toyota lost their life in the crash. The Toyota driver suffered severe injuries, while the BMW driver sustained minor injuries. The driver of the BMW was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence, with authorities indicating that alcohol and/or drugs may have played a role. The identity of the deceased individual in the Toyota will be disclosed by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office after notifying their next of kin. Although lanes on I-80 were temporarily obstructed, they were reopened completely by 5 a.m. according to CHP traffic records.
