Fatal crash on I-80 in Vacaville blocks lanes early Tuesday

(KRON) -- A 58-year-old Stockton man was killed Tuesday morning in Vacaville after a big rig struck his Mazda, which authorities said was blocking a lane of Interstate 80. Authorities responded around 4:20 a.m. to eastbound I-80 east of Leisure Town Road on the report of a two-vehicle collision involving a big rig, according to the California Highway Patrol. The preliminary investigation indicated that the 2016 Mazda was, for "unknown reasons," stopped and blocking one lane of eastbound I-80 before a 2024 Peterbilt 18-wheel big rig crashed into the vehicle, CHP said. Authorities are investigating whether the Mazda's lights were on at the time of the crash. "Alcohol is suspected to be a factor for the driver of the Mazda," CHP told KRON4. The driver of the big rig, a 59-year-old Pacifica man, was uninjured in the deadly collision. He remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation, CHP said. There were no passengers inside either vehicle. All eastbound lanes of I-80 were blocked following the crash, with traffic diverted to Leisure Town Road. One right lane was reopened around 5:50 a.m. before the roadway was fully cleared and reopened at 7:05 a.m.
