Fatal crash on 405 Freeway involving LAPD sergeant closes southbound lanes
A veteran Los Angeles police sergeant lost his life after being struck by oncoming traffic on the 405 Freeway as he attempted to assist drivers involved in a crash. The sergeant, identified as Shiou Deng by LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, had stopped at the scene of an initial two-car crash to provide help just after 2 a.m. Monday. Sadly, Deng was hit by a passing vehicle when he exited his own patrol car. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically did not survive. McDonnell praised Deng as a hero who always prioritized the safety of others, highlighting his promotion to sergeant and his work in the Mental Evaluation Unit. Mayor Karen Bass expressed sorrow for the city's loss, calling the sergeant an exemplar of selfless service. The 405 Freeway's southbound lanes were closed at Moraga Drive, with all traffic being diverted to the 101 Freeway as authorities investigated the incident.
