Fatal crash involving FDNY truck leaves 1 dead, 10 injured
GRAVESEND, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Investigators are searching for answers in a fatal multi-vehicle crash involving an FDNY fire truck. Authorities say a 78-year-old man was killed, and several more people were injured, including firefighters. A crucial question for investigators was whether the fire truck’s lights and sirens were on before the wreck. Preliminary findings suggest the truck’s lights and sirens were indeed on, but the owner of one of the trucks involved is not so sure. In a surveillance video shared with PIX11 News, a white utility van is seen traveling towards the intersection of Avenue S and West 11th Street before colliding with the FDNY truck. The firetruck's lights appeared to be on. Police say the firetruck was enroute to an emergency call, going east on Avenue S with emergency sirens blaring, when it crashed into that van at West 11 Street. Then, authorities say, the fire truck struck an Access-A-Ride van, which then crashed into a Lexus SUV. Police confirmed that the 78-year-old man was on board the Access-a-Ride van. At least 10 people, including six firefighters, were taken to hospitals and are in stable condition. The crash investigation is ongoing.
