Fatal crash into Manhasset Quaker Meeting House results in driver's death
A tragic incident occurred Thursday morning when a vehicle crashed into the historic Quaker Meeting House in Manhasset, resulting in one fatality. Authorities reported that the driver, who was the sole casualty, lost his life when his vehicle collided with the building at approximately 5:40 a.m. The car is said to have veered through the junction of Shelter Rock Road and Northern Boulevard before crashing into the house and catching fire. While the car was registered to a 41-year-old man from New Rochelle, it is uncertain if he was the driver. The 300-year-old Quaker Meeting House in Nassau County, which still hosts regular Sunday worship services, suffered visible foundation damage from the impact. The cause of the crash has not been determined yet, with law enforcement investigating the circumstances that led to the vehicle straying so far off the road. There are speculations about the driver possibly experiencing a medical emergency or visibility issues due to foggy conditions at the time. Authorities plan to use red light cameras to aid in examining the crash's cause. Various investigative units, such as the arson and bomb squads, fire marshals, detectives, and multiple fire departments, responded to the scene. The identity of the deceased driver has not been disclosed. The Quaker community, which uses the Meeting House for various activities, including meetings, homeschooling, and cultural programs, expressed deep concern over the incident as it marks the second time a vehicle has breached their premises recently. Despite the structural damage sustained by the house, whose history dates back to the 1700s and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, authority officials are evaluating its stability.
