
Fatal crash in Wood River after police chase
WOOD RIVER, Ill. - Two lives were tragically lost in a fatal crash caused by a reckless driver evading police in Wood River, Illinois. The Wood River Police Department tried to stop the individual during a traffic stop at Sixth Street and Edwardsville Road, but the driver fled, leading to a pursuit. The driver weaved through a business parking lot, drove over a curb, and continued southbound on Sixth Street, disregarding traffic signals. The chase ended when the driver ran a red light at the intersection of Illinois Route 143 and Illinois Route 3, colliding with another vehicle carrying two people, causing it to catch fire and resulting in the victims' deaths. The suspect, who was also injured, resisted arrest but was eventually apprehended by first responders and taken to a hospital. The victims' identities have not been disclosed, and the Illinois State Police is investigating the crash and will conduct an accident reconstruction.
