Fatal Crash in San Leandro Results in 2 Deaths; 2 CHP Officers Injured

Two individuals lost their lives and two California Highway Patrol officers sustained injuries in a series of crashes that brought a pursuit to an end in San Leandro early on Saturday morning. The tragic events unfolded when CHP officers from the Dublin area tried to stop a white Mercedes sedan speeding on westbound Interstate 580 near Eden Canyon Road in Castro Valley around 3:45 a.m. The driver of the Mercedes fled, leading to a pursuit that extended into San Leandro, where the driver attempted to exit onto East 14th Street from westbound Interstate 238, resulting in a collision with a sound wall. At the same exit, two CHP officers also crashed into the wall, but not into the Mercedes. Sadly, the driver and one passenger in the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries. The CHP officers were also taken to the hospital with significant but non-life-threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated by the CHP's Golden Gate Division Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, and the identities of the deceased individuals have not been disclosed.
