Fatal crash in San Leandro after CHP pursuit
Two individuals were fatally injured and two California Highway Patrol officers sustained injuries in a collision in San Leandro after a pursuit that originated in Castro Valley over the weekend. The incident began when CHP officers tried to pull over a speeding Mercedes sedan on the I-580 freeway early Saturday morning. The pursuit continued into San Leandro, where the suspect vehicle crashed while attempting to exit the freeway. The Mercedes hit a sound wall during the exit, and a CHP vehicle following it also crashed into the same wall. Unfortunately, the driver and a passenger in the Mercedes did not survive, while another passenger was hospitalized with severe injuries. The identities of the deceased suspects have not been disclosed. The two CHP officers involved in the pursuit-related crash were also hospitalized with significant but non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation into the cause of the incidents is currently underway.
