Fatal crash in Ohio Valley leaves 1 dead after being ejected from the vehicle, sends multiple others to hospital
MONROE COUNTY, OH (WTRF) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that happened Wednesday evening on State Route 78 in Adams Township. According to investigators, the crash happened around 9:57 p.m. on May 7. Troopers said a 2021 Kenworth commercial truck driven by 48-year-old Jason A. Taylor of Elba was attempting to enter State Route 78 westbound and failed to yield to eastbound traffic. Authorities said a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by 76-year-old Larry R. Henthorn of Middlebourne was traveling eastbound when it struck the left rear portion of the trailer, which was hauling sandboxes. Larry Henthorn was wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious injuries. He was flown by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital, according to troopers. The pickup truck was also carrying two passengers. Troopers said 65-year-old Deitra K. Henthorn of Sistersville was sitting in the front passenger seat and was transported to Reynolds Hospital with serious injuries. Authorities said 73-year-old Bernard R. McDougal of Martinsville was riding unrestrained in the back seat. Troopers said he was ejected through the front windshield and died from his injuries. Investigators said a second crash happened after the initial collision. A 2017 Ford Edge driven by 79-year-old Allen C. Spencer of New Martinsville struck the side of the trailer that remained in the roadway. Spencer suffered injuries and was taken to Wetzel County Hospital. Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Woodsfield Fire and EMS, Monroe County EMS, the Monroe County Coroner, the Ohio Department of Transportation and towing crews from St. Clairsville and Salesville. The crash remains under investigation.
