Fatal Crash in Mayfield Township
A tragic two-vehicle accident occurred in Mayfield Township early Friday morning, resulting in the loss of a 33-year-old woman from Northport and a 39-year-old man from Gaylord. Michigan State Police reported that the crash involved a white Jeep and a gray Jeep at the intersection of County Road 633 and Miller Road around 12:05am. The white Jeep, traveling west on Miller Road, failed to stop at a damaged stop sign due to a prior incident. The gray Jeep, traveling south on County Road 633, collided with the white Jeep on the passenger side. The female driver of the white Jeep passed away at the hospital, while her male passenger died at the crash site. The occupants of the gray Jeep, a 47-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl from Copemish, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation determined that speed and alcohol were not contributing factors to the collision. Authorities suspect an unreported incident affecting the stop sign occurred between 10pm Thursday and midnight. The Grand Traverse County Road Commission promptly installed temporary stop signs after discovering the issue following the accident. Anyone with information on the state of the stop sign during that period is encouraged to contact the Gaylord Regional Communications Center at 989-732-5141.
