Fatal crash in Kewanee involving vehicle and pedestrian
A tragic incident occurred in Kewanee last night resulting in the death of a pedestrian. The Kewanee Police Department received a report of a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian on West South Street around 10:11 p.m. Deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office also came to assist. Upon their arrival, emergency responders found the pedestrian, identified as Matthew P. Manthe, 51 years old, from Kewanee, and promptly initiated life-saving measures. Despite efforts by the Kewanee Fire Department EMS and later transfer to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria via Life Flight, Manthe succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old, received a citation for not reducing speed to avoid the accident. A thorough investigation led by the Kewanee Police Department is underway, including the assistance of the Peoria County Coroner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.
