Fatal crash in Coles County leaves one dead, two injured
1:30 p.m. Update - The Mattoon Fire Department has provided additional details on the tragic crash that occurred on I-57 this morning, resulting in one fatality. Chief Jeff Hilligoss stated that firefighters were called in to assist with a multi-vehicle collision involving two semi-trucks, one of which was transporting sugar water, and two passenger vehicles. Emergency responders had to extricate a trapped semi-truck driver, with two individuals taken to the hospital for treatment. The deceased victim's identity will not be disclosed until their family is notified. Hilligoss requested thoughts and prayers for all those affected by this unfortunate incident. The Illinois State Police confirmed the fatality and mentioned that three semis and multiple passenger vehicles were part of the crash. Traffic diversions are in place at Exit 192 as cleanup operations are ongoing, with the highway closure expected to persist for several hours. The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Southbound traffic is currently being redirected off I-57 in southern Coles County due to a crash involving two burning semi-trucks.
