Fatal crash follows Idaho campground shootout
An individual tragically lost their life on Sunday evening following a car crash that occurred during a police chase that stemmed from reports of gunfire at a campground in Cassia County. The incident began on June 23 when the Cassia County Sheriff's Office was alerted to shots being fired near the Sublett Campground. Responding to the call, police approached a parked 2005 Volvo XC90, but the driver quickly sped off upon their arrival. After a brief traffic stop, the driver fled when the deputy got close to the vehicle. The pursuit continued with state troopers joining in, but they lost sight of the Volvo due to high speeds and dusty conditions. A short time later, the vehicle crashed and rolled over. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save him, the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Inside the vehicle, authorities found a loaded rifle and shotgun, along with extra ammunition. The Cassia County Coroner's Office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death, while the identities of the driver and other details are pending release. The Idaho State Police are looking into the chase, and the crash investigation is being handled by the Minidoka County Sheriff's Office.
