Fatal crash and fire on westbound I-70 in Clear Creek County

A tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon along Interstate 70 just east of Loveland Pass. The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) reported that an individual and a dog lost their lives in a crash and subsequent fire. The collision involved a 2021 Ram truck with a trailer and a Freightliner semi-truck also carrying a trailer in the westbound lanes. CSP arrived at the scene at 1:07 p.m., where they found the Ram driver and the dog deceased. The sole driver of the Ram was involved in the crash. While the semi-truck driver was unharmed, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) described the vehicle fire as "significant." The incident led to the closure of eastbound lanes between Silverthorne and the tunnel, with westbound traffic being diverted near the Herman Gulch exit. The closure lasted for over two hours as authorities cleared the crash site. The lanes reopened by 5:15 p.m., with CSP urging travelers to proceed safely as traffic returned to normal.
