Fatal Crane Accident on Norwegian MPSV
Norwegian authorities are currently looking into the incident where a worker lost their life from a crane accident on an offshore MPSV last week. The event occurred on March 12 at the Hareid port, More og Romsdal, where a man was reported to have been fatally injured on the MPSV conversion Island Ocean (formerly known as Island Condor). The Norwegian Maritime Administration's initial findings revealed that the worker was crushed against the railing while repairing a platform under one of the vessel's cranes that was set in motion. The Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority is presently conducting an investigation, and specific details are not yet publicly available. Island Offshore CEO Tommy Walaunet stated that it would be premature to discuss the incident until the investigation is completed. Following the incident, the Seamen's Church provided support to the remaining crew. The company is collaborating with authorities and has implemented new safety procedures concerning crane operations on deck to prevent similar accidents in the future. Island Ocean, a 2014-built OSV under the Norwegian flag and operated by Island Offshore, was chartered by DeepOcean in 2024 for conversion into an MPSV, equipped with a 150-tonne crane and two ROVs designed to operate at depths of up to 3,000 meters. The vessel underwent modifications post-conversion to support inspection, maintenance, and repair (IMR) tasks and light subsea construction for the offshore energy sector.
