Fatal collision on I-295 in Scarborough involving wrong-way driver

Authorities from the Maine State Police reported that a man from Portland passed away as a result of driving in the wrong direction on Interstate 295 and colliding with a tractor-trailer in Scarborough. The incident occurred at 6 a.m. on Friday when the Bangor and Augusta regional communication centers received multiple reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the Maine Turnpike (Interstate 95) near mile marker 42 in Scarborough. Witnesses stated that a 2018 Ford Fusion was heading north in the southbound lanes of I-95 before entering I-295 and passing through the tolls in South Portland. Tragically, the car crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer heading south near Exit 4 on I-295. The driver of the car, identified as George Vandenburgh, aged 86, lost his life at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment. Both lanes of I-295 were closed for several hours, causing significant traffic disruptions and diversions, until they were later reopened. Authorities are currently investigating the crash.
