Fatal collision between Central California police officer and large truck.
A police officer from Central California tragically lost his life in an on-duty collision with a large truck on Friday night. The California Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident. The officer was driving a marked Chowchilla Police Department patrol vehicle on Highway 152 when a big rig attempted to cross the lanes, resulting in a collision between the patrol vehicle and the trailer of the big rig. The officer, identified as Ray Barrantes, succumbed to his injuries. The Chowchilla Police Department expressed their condolences and highlighted the officer's dedication and service. The driver of the big rig was unharmed, and alcohol does not seem to have played a role in the crash. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that flags would be lowered in honor of Officer Barrantes. The West Sacramento Police Department, where Barrantes had previously served, also mourned his passing. Chowchilla Police Chief Jeff Palmer shared the profound impact of the loss on the department and expressed the need for time to heal. The circumstances of the crash are currently being investigated by the CHP.
