Fatal collision between Amtrak train and SUV in James City County, VSP confirms

An investigation is underway in James City County following a fatal collision involving an Amtrak train and an SUV that resulted in one person's death on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. at the Peach Street crossing, where a 2019 Toyota Highlander crossed in front of an Amtrak train with 90 passengers on board. Initial findings suggest that the driver of the SUV, identified as 32-year-old Sarah Jones Mazariegos from Williamsburg, failed to stop at the private road crossing sign and did not yield the right of way to the oncoming train. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while no injuries were reported among the train passengers. Amtrak Train 186, which was scheduled to arrive in Williamsburg but remained halted just north of Newport News, is expected to experience an extended delay as emergency responders investigate and necessary repairs are made. Passengers are advised to remain patient and informed about potential changes in departure times through the Amtrak app or website.
