Fatal accident on I-75 involving truck driver and multiple MDOT crew members.

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday on Interstate 75 in Monroe County, Michigan, resulting in the loss of a truck driver's life and injuries to several road construction workers. The collision took place around 9 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-75 near the I-275 split in Frenchtown Township north of Monroe. Following the crash, all northbound lanes were temporarily shut down at Exit 18/Nadeau Road and are expected to remain closed at Exit 20/I-275 until further notice. Despite efforts to clear the area, the highway was still closed at that section past noon on Tuesday, causing heavy traffic on nearby US-24/Telegraph Road. The Michigan Department of Transportation crews were conducting maintenance on the left lane of I-75 when the incident occurred. Two MDOT vehicles with impact protection were stationed behind the crew to ensure safety. Tragically, the truck collided with one of these vehicles, resulting in a jackknife motion and also hitting a second attenuator vehicle, causing aluminum cans from the truck's cargo area to spill onto the highway. The truck driver was pronounced deceased at the scene, with details about his age and place of residence yet to be released. Several MDOT workers suffered minor injuries and are currently being treated. Investigation into the crash is underway by troopers from the Monroe post and officers from the Michigan State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, along with support from the Frenchtown Township Fire Department.
