Fatal Accident on Barber Mills Road in Johnston County and DWI Driver Involved, According to Troopers.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, a tragic accident occurred on Barber Mills Road just outside Clayton late Friday night. The crash, which took place before 10 p.m. at 3230 Barber Mill Road near Vinson Farm Lane, resulted in one fatality, confirmed by the troopers. The medical examiner was called to the scene, and the victim, 79-year-old Gus Drellos, was pronounced dead after his Chevrolet passenger van crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Subaru Forester driven by Juan Rodriguez. Despite Rodriguez not being at fault, he was subsequently charged with a DWI. Two passengers, one of them a 7-year-old girl, in the Subaru also sustained injuries. Barber Mill Road was closed in both directions by the North Carolina Department of Transportation from 10 p.m. until after midnight Saturday.
