Fatal accident near Sheridan shuts down US-31 southbound
A fatal accident occurred on U.S. 31 in northern Hamilton County, resulting in the closure of the southbound lane and one northbound lane on Thursday morning. The incident took place around 4:45 a.m. between 246th and 256th streets near the Hamilton and Tipton county border. According to information from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, one person lost their life in the collision. Southbound traffic on U.S. 31 is blocked, and motorists are being redirected to SR-28. Commuters are advised to use eastbound SR-28 to southbound SR-19 in Tipton, then head west on 236th Street to access southbound U.S. 31. The crash site is located just north of downtown Westfield, affecting traffic in both directions. Crews are currently on site carrying out investigations and cleanup, with one northbound lane closed. The northbound lane is anticipated to reopen within the next hour, while no estimated time has been provided for reopening the southbound lanes.
