Fatal accident involving horseback riders in Riverside County; another rider critically hurt

A tragic accident occurred when a car collided with two horses in Riverside County's Anza area, resulting in the death of one rider and serious injuries to another. The crash took place on SR-371 near Contreras Road just before 9:30 p.m. According to California Highway Patrol officers, two female riders were thrown from the horses upon impact. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, one rider was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries. The collision occurred when two horses from a group of family and friends riding on the shoulder of SR-371 unexpectedly entered the highway lanes. The sedan traveling in the opposite direction struck the horses at a reasonable speed, with the driver remaining unharmed and cooperating with authorities. Factors like speed, alcohol, or drugs are not believed to have played a role in the incident, which is currently being investigated. Eyewitnesses were urged to contact the CHP at 951-846-5300 for further assistance.
