Fatal accident in NYC's Chinatown involving cyclist and pedestrian.

A tragic incident occurred in Manhattan's Chinatown when a driver struck pedestrians, resulting in the deaths of two individuals on Saturday morning at Canal Street and Broadway. The driver of a speeding blue Chevy Malibu hit a male cyclist, a female pedestrian sitting on a bench, and an unoccupied NYPD van after crossing into Manhattan from the Manhattan Bridge. Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene, but both victims were pronounced dead. Although their identities have not been disclosed, the cyclist was a man thought to be in his 30s, while the pedestrian was identified as a woman in her 60s. The aftermath of the crash showed considerable damage, with the Chevy Malibu's front crumpled and windshield shattered, the police van severely impacted at the rear, and the victims' belongings scattered around. Witnesses described the chaos that ensued, including the NYPD van colliding with the New York Jewelers Exchange store. The driver and a passenger, both women in their 20s, attempted to flee the scene but were apprehended by the police with the help of witnesses. Following their detention, they were taken to a hospital for evaluation and were reported to be in stable condition. Police discovered that the driver was not authorized to operate the vehicle, which bore Wisconsin plates and was a past-due rental from a Staten Island car rental service. This devastating event has left the community in a state of sadness and shock.
