Family uses old law to charge driver's mother in deadly Grosse Pointe Farms accident

A mother from Grosse Pointe Farms has been accused of involuntary manslaughter in a unique case where the charges were issued by the Mackrell family themselves, utilizing a 1927 law. This legal action stems from a tragic car accident where a teenage driver, Kiernan Tague, was driving well above the speed limit and caused the death of 18-year-old Flynn Mackrell. Despite the family's efforts to see further charges laid against Tague's mother, Elizabeth, the prosecutor's office declined to pursue the case. Attorney Arthur Weiss, representing the Mackrell family, stated that Tague's mother was aware of his history of driving recklessly through the Life 360 app. The family and their attorney presented evidence to a judge, who found sufficient cause for the case to proceed. However, the Wayne County Prosecutor's office intervened, claiming the court had overstepped its authority, leading to a legal dispute over the appointment of a special prosecuting attorney. The mother now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter brought by the Mackrell family.
