Family sues police for fatal high-speed collision in Hillsboro

The family of 19-year-old Adriana Renee Shelton Cazares, who tragically lost her life in a high-speed vehicle crash in 2022, has taken legal action by filing a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court against the Hillsboro Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office. It was reported that the incident originated when two juveniles, who were later apprehended, stole a vehicle after meeting the seller on Craigslist, leading to a pursuit. The pursuit culminated in a collision with another vehicle at Northwest 185th Avenue near Northwest Eider Court in Hillsboro, resulting in the loss of Adriana Cazares and her 20-year-old cousin Aaliyah Shelton. The lawsuit claims that law enforcement officers from the two agencies were involved in initiating, authorizing, and continuing a dangerous pursuit that ultimately ended in tragedy. The plaintiffs further allege that the seller, who chased the juveniles in an effort to reclaim the stolen vehicle, also played a significant role in the victims' demise and is included as a defendant in the lawsuit. Other entities mentioned in the lawsuit include the parents of the juveniles, the city, and the county, with claims that policies and procedures regarding pursuits were not properly implemented or enforced. Despite requests for comment, there has been no response from the City of Hillsboro, the Hillsboro Police Department, Washington County, or the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
