Family reacts to deadly police shooting of Rajon Belt-Stubblefield captured on bodycam and surveillance video
Aurora police have made public a series of videos from body-worn cameras, surveillance footage, and witness cellphones that detail the events leading up to the fatal shooting of Rajon Belt-Stubblefield on Aug. 30. The release of the videos followed a news conference by Belt-Stubblefield's family and their legal team, who described the footage as showing "unjustifiable" and "excessive use of force." The body camera video, which can be shared with the public 72 hours after the family has viewed it, captures about three minutes before and after the shooting incident. Denver7 has reviewed various pieces of footage capturing the encounter between the officer and Belt-Stubblefield, spanning about 85 seconds from the initial command to the moment of gunfire. The video includes profane language and graphic content that may be disturbing to some viewers. Aurora police refrained from providing new comments on the video release and instead directed inquiries to comments made by Police Chief Todd Chamberlain on Sept. 2, where he defended the officer's actions as attempts to de-escalate the situation. Belt-Stubblefield's family's attorney argued that the officer could have managed the situation without causing harm. The altercation started with an attempted traffic stop, details of which remain unclear, and culminated in Belt-Stubblefield crashing into vehicles before the confrontation ensued. Witnesses' accounts and video footage indicate a series of events leading up to the fatal shooting, which has sparked controversy and accusations of police aggression. The incident is under investigation by the 18th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team, with Aurora PD conducting its administrative review alongside.
