Family of young Indian trucker requests mercy after fatal US crash caused by his u-turn
The family and community of Harjinder Singh, an Indian-origin truck driver from Punjab facing a severe jail sentence in the US for a fatal crash, are requesting a more compassionate judgment considering his age and unfortunate circumstances. Harjinder is accused of causing a fatal collision by making an illegal u-turn while driving a tractor-trailer. Three individuals lost their lives in the incident which led to his arrest in California. His family is devastated and unable to comment at this time. Concerns were raised regarding the impact on his family if he were to receive the potential 45-year sentence. Requests have been made to Sikh organizations for assistance and support. Harjinder had left for the US after mortgaging part of his family's farmland in 2018, leaving his elder brother and mother in Tarn Taran, Punjab. The village leadership and elders are advocating for a lenient approach from the US authorities due to Harjinder's misfortune in the tragic accident. The US has paused issuing new work visas for truck drivers, prompting political figures in India to advocate on Harjinder's behalf and express concerns over potential discrimination against Punjabi and Sikh truck drivers in the US. A petition has been initiated by Collective Punjabi Youth for a reduced sentence for Harjinder Singh.
