Family of Volusia County woman killed in head-on crash speaks out
A Volusia County family is grieving the loss of 27-year-old mother of two, Keissy Luperon. Georgie Irizarry was Luperon's partner of nine years. Luperon was the mother of their two young daughters. "She was one of a kind," he said. "Joyful, loving, always talking about the kids." He said Luperon was supposed to get out of work around 1 a.m. Wednesday, but she was asked to stay late. "I was like, just come home, and she said, 'No, I'm finished," he said she told him. Irizarry said she left work around 3 a.m. and gave him a call. "And says, 'Babe, I'm on my way to get to the car, on my way home. I love you, I'll see you in a bit,'" he said. But she wouldn't see him again. "Within six minutes, my phone goes on SOS mode," Irizarry said. "It says that she got involved in a car accident."He drove to her last location. "I said, 'This can't be it, this can't be it.' But once I saw the car, I knew," he said. According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a Ford was driving the wrong way down Kepler Avenue in Deland, hitting Luperon's car head-on, killing her. Speaking barely a day after she was killed, Luperon's family said they're leaning on each other right now and trying to take care of their daughters. "Just show her pictures and memories and pray. We pray together, we send mommy messages and be strong," Irizarry said. The driver of the other car involved that morning had only minor injuries. FHP said the crash is still under investigation and hasn't said if the driver could face any charges. "You took someone's life. You took my wife's life. You changed my daughters' lives. You have to pay," Irizarry said. WESH 2 has reached out to FHP for the latest on the investigation.
