Exclusive: Victim’s brother, shop owner express sorrow over deadly crash

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — The investigation into a deadly car crash in the early hours of Thursday morning in Waterbury continued Friday evening. Authorities have said it will be some time before all the details are clear. But one of the victim's brothers is only telling News 8, as is the owner of Hernandez Market, where the crash happened. Sadness fills the sidewalk, feet away from the crash site. A makeshift memorial is on display where candles flicker and balloons wobble in the wind off of Cherry Street, where the accident occurred. Flowers drape the fence in memory of the four lives lost early Thursday morning. 20-year old Johnaven Puszka, and also the three brothers — 20-year-old Jayden Torres,  25-year-old Nelson Torres, and 15-year-old Noel Torres — all killed in the crash. Exclusive video obtained by News 8 shows the moment of impact when the BMW hit the building. A white flash fills in the air.   The tearing down of Hernandez Market continues. The force and speed of the car, partially collapsed the building.  Lydia Rodriguez, the owner of Hernandez Market, exclusively told News 8 that her family is devastated about the loss of life. But, also saying it's just a building and bricks are windows are all replaceable. "The life, it’s more important, material not important, the lives are most important, everything else goes in the garbage now." Rodriguez said. Johnaven Puszka’s brother Tommy lit candles at the sidewalk memorial.  Adding that he literally spoke to his brother 30 minutes before the crash, he never realized it would be their last conversation. Tommy Puszka said his brother didn't like speed, and no doubt he said his brother must have been yelling at the driver to slow it down. Rodriguez said she and her husband have owned this business for 20 years. But her heart is heavy for the families who are hurting so, so badly. "This is nothing, nothing, my husband has insurance for that,” Rodriguez said. Rodriguez also told News 8 that even if the building was fixable, which it is not, she and her husband would never want it back.  Because of the horrible loss of life that happened.  Watch the full story above.
