Ex-Rep. Mary Peltola's Husband Killed in Plane Crash Due to Excess Moose Meat and Antler Dragging, NTSB Report述

A recent report released by federal investigators revealed that the 2023 small plane crash in Juneau, Alaska, which resulted in the tragic death of Eugene Peltola Jr., the husband of former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, was caused by a combination of factors. The National Transportation Safety Board's final report listed reasons such as the plane being overweight for takeoff and possessing moose antlers mounted on the right wing strut, causing drag. Additionally, turbulent flight conditions in the area played a role in the accident. According to NTSB Alaska Region Chief Clint Johnson, the aircraft's overweight condition, the drag from the antlers, and wind turbulence all contributed to the crash. The Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub crashed in a remote area northeast of St. Mary's, Alaska, with Peltola Jr. being the sole occupant of the plane. The tragic incident occurred when he was transporting moose meat for hunters from Holy Cross to St. Mary's. His decision to load the plane above its maximum takeoff weight without proper weighing equipment played a significant role in the crash. Additionally, the use of moose antlers as external cargo caused unforeseen drag, contributing to the loss of control over the aircraft.
