Events leading to deadly crash on I-70 in Colorado described by investigators

Colorado State Patrol investigators revealed additional information on Friday about the events leading up to the tragic fiery collision on I-70 in the mountainous region. The incident involved a collision between a RAM camper utility van towing a trailer and a semi truck pulling an empty trailer, occurring around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels. The RAM vehicle was in the right lane traveling westbound when it veered onto the shoulder and struck the back of the semi's trailer while the semi was parked. This impact caused the semi to move forward slightly. Subsequently, the RAM van caught fire, leading to the tragic deaths of both the driver and a dog who were unable to escape. The identity of the driver has not been disclosed. Fortunately, the driver of the semi did not sustain any injuries. The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Following the incident, both westbound and eastbound lanes were closed, affecting traffic on the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend. The eastbound lanes were reopened about an hour afterwards, while the westbound lanes remained closed for an extended period, causing significant traffic delays.
