Encinitas community grieves 12-year-old girl killed in crash

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 12-year-old girl was hit and killed while walking in a crosswalk after two cars collided at an Encinitas intersection Friday night, and the community and school are grieving after the tragic crash. “It’s just a tragic accident,” said Maria Morales. “It’s really heartbreaking,” said Victoria Hernandez. “Just an accident happening and taking a young life like that, it really hit very close,” said Morales. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office reports the girl was hit by an SUV after the vehicle first collided with a car at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Maria Morales said she works nearby and heard about the crash. Though she didn’t know the victim, she and her daughter stopped by the memorial on Monday. "To pray for her and mostly for her family, her family that has a lot to deal with right now. We’re praying for them to have strength to get through this,” said Morales. The girl attended Park Dale Elementary School in Encinitas. The school district told us in a statement, in part, “…She was a vibrant 12-year-old who shined with creativity, kindness, and a bright spirit. She brought warmth and friendliness wherever she went, inspiring those around her and making her a true joy to know. Her loss will be profoundly felt at our school…” The school also told us they have a crisis team with counselors on site to support students and staff for as long as they need. “This is Encinitas. This is a beach town, a safe town. I grew up here. Cars don't go that fast around here. I don’t know what happened,” said Morales. If you witnessed the crash or have video of the incident, the sheriff’s office encourages you to reach out to them with any information or reach out anonymously to San Diego County Crime Stoppers.
