Elderly driver, 95, receives misdemeanor charge in fatal collision with pedestrian
A 95-year-old woman was given a sentence on Tuesday related to a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a beloved wife and mother. Phyllis Stafford, who expressed regret, unintentionally caused the death of 59-year-old Sarah Thexton in October. Christopher Thexton, Sarah's husband, recounted the horrific details in court and expressed disappointment that Stafford was charged with a misdemeanor for causing a moving violation resulting in death. Despite his plea for the maximum sentence, Stafford was sentenced to 270 days of house arrest, probation, and community service by Judge Diane D'Agnostini. The judge considered factors such as Stafford's age, clean record, and support. Christopher Thexton criticized the lenient sentencing and described Stafford's apology as insincere, emphasizing that it cannot bring back his wife. The Thexton family intends to file a civil suit and advocate for changes in laws regarding elderly drivers.
