El Salvador man arrested by FBI and ICE a year after suspected involvement in deadly accident

An individual from El Salvador who was living in the United States illegally has been apprehended over a year after being involved in a deadly accident in Indianapolis. Alexis Otoniel Hernandez-Araujo, 26, was arrested with the help of a combined team of the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday morning in Indianapolis. Hernandez-Araujo is accused of driving under the influence on July 6, 2024, and crashing into a vehicle driven by a pregnant woman. The crash tragically resulted in the death of Hernandez-Araujo's 19-year-old brother, serious injuries to a pregnant woman and two children, including a 5-year-old who suffered a skull fracture and a broken hip. Following the incident, Hernandez-Araujo resisted officers who attempted to detain him at the scene. Despite being taken to a hospital after the crash, official records show that he was never formally arrested. Hernandez-Araujo was under probation at the time for a prior drunk driving offense. A warrant for his arrest was issued nearly three weeks later after he left the scene. On Thursday, a joint operation between the FBI and ICE led to his arrest. Hernandez-Araujo now faces multiple felony charges including reckless homicide. In Indiana, a Level 4 felony carries a maximum sentence of 12 years.
