East Hartford woman arrested over a year after fatal crash on I-91
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — An East Hartford woman turned herself into State Police on Tuesday on charges stemming from a fatal crash on I-91 in Rocky Hill in March, 2024. Mackenzie Simpson, 19, was charged with second-degree manslaughter and was later released from custody on a $100,000 court set bond. She is scheduled to appear at New Britain Superior Court on June 6. According to State Police, on March 30, 2024, Simpson was allegedly driving an Acura with four passengers in the car southbound on I-91 at a high rate of speed. Police believe she was involved in "racing activities" with the driver of another Acura, D'andre Charles. When the vehicle being driven by Charles was behind a tractor-trailer, he allegedly tried to maneuver around the tractor-trailer to the right, where the vehicle being driven by Simpson was traveling. The two vehicles collided, along with the tractor-trailer, causing Simpson's car to run off the road to the shoulder, and Charles' car to hit the median rail and rollover, ejecting Charles from the vehicle, resulting in his death. Both Simpson and Charles were allegedly driving recklessly, reaching speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour.
