East Aurora local survives severe crash in Utah
A man from Western New York who now resides in Utah recently survived a harrowing accident while out in nature with his dog. Jacob Schmitt, originally from East Aurora, was scouting deer in the Uinta Mountains on July 20. While attempting to turn around on a familiar trail, his side-by-side vehicle unexpectedly tilted, causing him to plunge down a steep cliff. Despite sustaining serious injuries including a broken leg, Schmitt managed to create a makeshift splint using duct tape, a belt, and a stick. His loyal 6-year-old dog Buddy stayed by his side throughout the ordeal, assisting Schmitt as he crawled back to his truck over 11 hours. Eventually helped by a diner employee, Schmitt spent several days in the hospital recovering from his injuries. He advises others to be prepared for emergencies in the wilderness, emphasizing the importance of self-rescue. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support his medical bills.
