E-bike rider injured in crash on North Elm Street in Westfield
WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An e-bike rider in Westfield was issued a citation after a crash with a vehicle on Sunday. Westfield Police Captain Eric Hall told 22News officers were called at around 11 a.m. on Sunday for a report of an e-bike rider who was struck by a vehicle in the area of 182 North Elm Street. Captain Hall says that the e-bike rider allegedly pulled out into traffic from a private driveway. A vehicle was traveling southbound in the travel lane when the e-bike rider pulled out in front of it, causing a crash. The e-bike rider was seriously injured. Officers issued a citation to the e-bike rider. E-bikes in Massachusetts are divided into three levels, with Levels 1 and 2 at a maximum speed of 20 mph and requiring helmets for riders under 17 years old. E-Bikes exceeding 20 mph or 750 watts are classified as Level 3 and require a helmet, license, and registration. Police also recommend that riders signal turns when operating any e-bike.
