Durham Freeway closed after crash early Sunday morning near Swift Avenue, officials say
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Troopers are investigating what led to a crash on N.C. Highway 147, also known as the Durham Freeway, near the downtown area. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation went out around 3 a.m. that a crash occurred at NC-147 between mile markers 4 and 5 near Swift Avenue. According to the Durham Police Department, both directions of NC-147 are closed due to the crash. "Northbound traffic is being redirected at Swift Avenue, and southbound traffic is being redirected at Fulton Street," police said on a social media post. "Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes and should expect heavy delays in the area at this time." Police also said the Anderson Street overpass at NC-147 is also closed. NCDOT cameras showed a heavy police presence and heavy-duty vehicles at the scene on NC-147 while troopers used flashlights to gather evidence. A spokesperson with the police told CBS 17 that N.C. State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. We have reached out to troopers to find out the cause and any injuries as a result of the crash. According to NCDOT, NC-147 is expected to reopen around 9 a.m. Sunday.
