Drunk driver sentenced for deadly Fairview collision

In Fairview, a drunk driver caused a fatal wrong-way crash last year, resulting in the death of a woman. The individual responsible for the incident, Rosa Hitzfield, was recently sentenced to more than seven years in prison by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office. The collision occurred on the night of Oct. 13, 2024, when Hitzfield drove in the wrong direction on Fairview Parkway and collided with another vehicle driven by Michael Abbate. Tragically, Abbate's mother, Marcia, who was in the backseat, lost her life due to the crash. Hitzfield, found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including second-degree manslaughter and DUII. The presiding judge, Jenna Plank, handed down a 90-month prison sentence to Hitzfield. Despite the devastating loss suffered by the Abbate family, Deputy District Attorney Andrew Wood commended their strength and compassion during the legal proceedings. Wood expressed hope that the sentencing would bring a sense of closure to the family and convey that justice has been served.
