Drivers still in hospital after serious accident on SW 9th Street

A collision involving two vehicles occurred on the southern part of Des Moines on Thursday afternoon, resulting in three people sustaining injuries. The incident took place at the intersection of SW 9th Street and Payton, where a truck traveling north collided with an SUV heading east. Des Moines police have confirmed that two individuals are currently in the hospital, but fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening. According to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department, the crash was declared as high-speed and caused the SUV to be pushed into a telephone pole. The 68-year-old female driver of the SUV was trapped for over an hour before firefighters successfully rescued her. The collision harmed three individuals: the 21-year-old male truck driver, his 17-year-old male passenger, and the 68-year-old female SUV driver. The truck passenger has been discharged from the hospital, while both drivers are still receiving medical care. Witnesses nearby, such as Anna Schneider from the Family Eye Health Center, reported hearing a loud noise from the accident, prompting them to call emergency services. Parizek stressed that speed appeared to be a significant factor in the crash and urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, particularly on heavily trafficked roads like SW 9th Street. Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the collision and the speeds involved.
